“Every time Knowles laid into one of her foot-stomping reels, she’d set Gaige Auditorium ablaze.”
Channing Gray, Journal-Bulletin Arts Writer
A testament to her versatility as a player, she has recorded and/or performed with a remarkable list of artists such as jazz pianist Marcus Roberts, minimalist composer Steve Reich, singer Karan Casey, singer David Kincaid, classical violinist Rachel Barton Pine, pop singers Paula Cole and Don Henley, and singer/instrumentalist Tim O’Brien.
As a soloist, she recorded on Eliot Goldenthal's soundtrack for Michael Collins and along with her husband, piper Kieran O'Hare, she performed and recorded as soloist with the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra. She was a member of the John Whelan band and Cherish the Ladies and today performs as a member of the highly acclaimed String Sisters, the female fiddle super group founded by Shetland fiddler Catriona MacDonald and Norwegian fiddler Annbjorg Lien. It has been as composer and arranger that Liz has been able to truly synthesize her classical and Irish music backgrounds. As a member of Ensemble Galilei for over ten years, her skills at arranging for both traditional, classical, and early music instruments were honed. In addition to the many Ensemble Galilei recordings, Liz’s compositions and string arrangements can be heard on albums by John Whelan, Liz Carroll, Beolach (Cape Breton), J.P. Cormier, (Cape Breton singer/songwriter) and Flook, as well as albums by singers Pamela Wyn Shannon, Christa Burch, and Michael Black. Her first solo album, "The Celtic Fiddle of Liz Knowles”, features some of her own compositions. She has arranged her own tunes for string orchestra, recently performing them with the Metropolis Symphony Orchestra at Symphony Hall in Chicago. As music director for Celtic Legends, she has composed and/or arranged all of the music for the show and is currently working on a new show for the coming year.
